For indoor use the same materials may be employed as those for a hearth slab. Most materials need or benefit from sealing to prevent staining and improve scratch resistance. This may be as simple as Linseed oil for riven slate, Beeswax polishes on honed surfaces or some of the more exotic acrylic coatings sold by companies such as Lithofin. Care, however, must be taken with Marble and Limestone which are sensitive to acids such as fruit juice.
Most materials are suitable for exterior use though only Slate is available in large slabs with a natural riven surface.
Imported Sandstone is also available with a riven surface in smaller sizes and is very hard wearing.
Most but not all Limestone’s can be used outdoors.
So if its worktops for the Barbecue, Bench tops for a secluded area of the garden or rugged window cills, think big – think slate and stone.
